Balance goes negative in one or more years under the current plan. Most LSL schemes will not let leave be taken beyond the available balance.

How this works: Half-pay leave doubles the calendar time off but only deducts half as many days from the balance (e.g. 16 calendar days off at half pay deducts 8 days). Accrual is pro-rated to actual working days per week, not a standard 5-day week. Balance carries forward year to year: opening balance + accrual ? days deducted.
